Creating Successful Corporate Walking Challenges

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! There are millions of Americans who struggle with mental illness every day; however, the past year living in a global pandemic has brought new attention to just how vital mental wellness is. COVID brought new disruptions, challenges and concerns for everyone, especially those in the workforce. If you’ve noticed employee disengagement this year and are looking to improve morale in the workplace, we can help.

1. Struggles of the Modern Workforce

Although living in our “new normal” might have kept us physically safe and healthy, many employees feel burned out, isolated, languishing and unhappy. According to Gallup, 7 out of 10 individuals worldwide feel like they struggled and suffered in life throughout 2020, and a third of Americans are showing signs of clinical anxiety or depression. This means it’s more important than ever for companies to invest in their employees’ mental wellness. Not only will investing in employees boost morale in the workplace, but it will also improve productivity since workers are almost 15% more productive when they are in a positive, uplifted mood.

2. How Can Businesses Support Employee Wellbeing?

There are multiple ways businesses can combat employee disengagement. One of our favorite examples is a 30 Day Wellness Challenge we did with American University last year. Employees completed and logged various wellness activities each day that supported multiple areas of well-being. The program was customized for the population, and included activities such as exercising with a friend, cooking a healthy meal, listening to a podcast, and enjoying 15 minutes of sunshine. At the end of the 30 Days of Wellness Challenge, employees' physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual health felt notably improved. We also learned how strong the link is between physical and mental wellness and how it looks different for each individual.

However, a 30 Day Wellness Challenge isn’t the only way to avoid employee disengagement! Some other successful ways to do so include Employee Resource Groups, mental health training and offering wellness programs that leverage intrinsic motivation. We can help you customize a solution that works best for you and your team!
